Swift Horsman girls do their bit for charity

Two girls from Swift Horsman are doing their bit for charity, their stories are below:

Andrea Wenzel – Jungle walk in Borneo in aid of the Isabel Hospice

In September with a group of other volunteers I'll be travelling to Borneo to take part in a challenge in aid of Isabel hospice.
Trekking approx 8 hours a day through primary and secondary jungle near the Kota Kinabalu area, we'll be camping under the stars, with the local wildlife. Fear is starting to set in!

The following days are spent with a local community in Kuala Penyu assisting with a development project, details of which are still be confirmed.

My training so far has included a 27 mile walk (I couldn't walk up stairs afterwards!), regular walks with the group and walking at every available opportunity to break in my boots!

Within the group we all have our reasons for taking part, for me Isabel hospice has given amazing support to my family.  The hospice itself cares for people across eastern Hertfordshire who suffer from life-limiting illnesses. Their ethos is to treat the whole person, not simply their illness, and to maximise quality of life. Last year they cared for over 2,700 patients, family members and carers, free of charge. To give this free care, they need to raise over £4 million each year. Of this total, £2.7 million must be raised from charitable sources.

Fundraising so far has included a calendar and quiz evening for friends & family. All support in helping me is greatly appreciated, if you would like to make a donation and read more about the charity then please follow link below. Thank you Andrea

Jo Tickner – Swimming the Thames in aid of Wateraid

In a moment of madness, i have decided to swim a mile in the Great River Thames on Saturday 3rd of July.  I'm fundraising for Wateraid who provide safe water around the world to those in need.

Safe water and sanitation are basic human rights. Everyone in the world should have access to them, yet One in eight people do not have access to safe water, around 884 million people, Wateraid provide clean safe water, as well as educating people on hygiene techniques and assisting local community projects to prevent many dying from lack of safe water.

They will appreciate every penny and it all counts...
£5 can buy a bag of cement to make a latrine slab in Ghana
£15 can help one person gain access to safe water, sanitation and improved hygiene.
£20 can train four hand pump mechanics in India.
£21 can pay a trained mason to help construct a well in Malawi.

In a bid to raise funds for some clean water, I will be swimming in the dirty Thames water, where I'll be donning the wetsuit and hoping the sharks and dead bodies don't grab me from the depths!

If you would like some entertainment in return for your pennies, please come down at watch at Victoria Dock on Saturday
